Adam Melville undertook his Foundation studies at Chelsea College of Art & Design where he later developed an investigative approach to composition and texture through a course in Printed Textile Design. He then went on to gain his BA in Interior Architecture from Kingston University. It is this engagement with the built environment that has informed much of his art practice.
Interested in the inherent contradictions and limitations of presenting three dimensions in two-dimensional drawn form, early work examined the abstraction of perspective, scale, positive and negative space within linear media. These threads have progressed naturally to shape the current work.
Informed in equal measure by architectural form and conceptual study, the work draws on both the graphic clarity of architectural drawing and the tangible materiality of model making, while suggesting boldly rationalised or implied form through an articulation of light and shadow.
Through the medium of relief and actively animated by light, each piece is constructed to offer the observer subtle variations in experience through temporal changes in ambient light conditions. Thus the work is also concerned with an exploration of the relationships between material and memory, the permanent and the transient.
Much of the imagery explores how our urban space is, or may be perceived. Often employing inherently familiar architectural motifs and language, the work implicitly communicates recognisable but essentially imagined landscapes.
While architecture is most often understood as intuitively pragmatic repetition of material elements and the built environment as a composite visual tapestry, this work explores reinventions of the urban landscape by capturing projected and abstracted impressions received from reality.
The influences behind my work span both the architectural and art spheres, and include the work of Tadao Ando, Anni Albers, Superstudio, and Archigram, finding more contemporary commonality with Toby Paterson, Martin Kobe, and Lucy Williams.
Although primarily concerned with working within the context of the city, I have also explored other more diverse themes through photography, drawing, graphic design and various media.
In addition to undertaking personal and commercial commissions, I am committed to pursuing my own personal practice. Many of the ideas developed through this practice naturally inform commissioned works and I am always interested in pursuing creative dialogue and collaboration with others.
